New Balance
9060 vs 2002R:
What's the Difference?

Both are New Balance. Both are chunky. Both are everywhere right now. But they're built for very different people — and buying the wrong one is an easy mistake to make.

Quick verdict
9060
Best for: maximum bulk, technical dressers, bold colourways
2002R
Best for: cleaner look, versatility, first chunky NB
Can't choose? If you want one chunky New Balance to start with — go with the 2002R. It's the more wearable shoe by a wide margin.

Where they both came from

New Balance has been on a remarkable run for the past three years, and both the 9060 and the 2002R sit at the heart of that resurgence. Both draw from the brand's rich archive of performance running shoes — but they come from very different eras and were built with very different goals.

The 2002R is a modernised version of the original 2002, a premium running shoe from 2010 built around New Balance's N2 cushioning technology. The "R" stands for re-engineered — it takes the original silhouette and updates the materials and construction for a contemporary audience. The result is a shoe that feels rooted in craft and heritage without feeling dated.

The 9060 is a newer creation, introduced in 2022 as a fusion of several archival New Balance running silhouettes — most notably the 860v2 and the 990v3. It was designed from the start to be a fashion-forward chunky runner, and it wears that intention openly. More aggressive, more maximalist, more statement.

The silhouette: what they actually look like

Put them side by side and the difference is immediately clear. The 2002R is the more restrained of the two — its proportions are chunky but controlled, with a multi-layer upper that feels premium without being overwhelming. The toe box is rounder and the overall shape feels wearable across a wide range of outfits.

The 9060 is a bigger shoe in every sense. The midsole is thicker, the outsole is more exaggerated, and the layered upper construction has more visual complexity. If the 2002R is the sophisticated choice, the 9060 is the statement piece.

"If the 2002R is the sophisticated chunky runner, the 9060 is the one that announces itself before you've sat down."

The fit: how they wear

Both shoes run true to size for most people, but there are important differences in how they feel on foot.

The 2002R has a relatively standard fit — true to size, with a toe box that's roomy enough for most foot widths. It's comfortable straight out of the box and doesn't require much of a break-in period. If you have wide feet, you might want to go half a size up, but most people won't need to.

The 9060 also runs true to size but feels slightly more structured and snug, particularly around the midfoot. The extra cushioning means the shoe has more volume overall, but the upper holds the foot more firmly. Wide-footed buyers should go half a size up.

The styling: what to wear them with

The 2002R is the more versatile shoe. Its cleaner construction and more controlled proportions mean it pairs well with a wider range of outfits — straight-leg or wide-leg denim, chinos, joggers, even tailored trousers if you're going for a sport-meets-polish look. The earthy, muted colourways that New Balance tends to produce for the 2002R make it easy to build outfits around.

The 9060 demands more from the outfit around it. Because it's such a visually dominant shoe, the rest of the look needs to be simpler to avoid the whole thing feeling chaotic. Wide, relaxed silhouettes work best — loose trousers, oversized tops, technical outerwear. It doesn't play well with fitted or tailored pieces.

Colourways: what's worth buying

2002R: The Protection Pack colourways are the standout releases — particularly the Light Arctic Grey/Purple and the Olive/Brown variants. New Balance has consistently produced excellent earth-toned colourways for the 2002R that hold their value and age well. The "Sea Salt" and "Mirage Grey" colourways are also strong picks for everyday wear.

9060: The 9060 has benefited from strong collaboration releases — the Joe Freshgoods "Conversations Amongst Us" pack and the Aime Leon Dore colourway are the most coveted. For general wear, the Rain Cloud and the Beige/Brown colourways are the most versatile. Bold colourways like Neon Yellow work best if you're fully committed to the statement aesthetic.
